Joe Whetung

Joe Whetung

Joe Whetung 8/29/48-4/19/24

We've just heard that Joe Whetung passed away this last Friday.  I haven't any obituary yet or any details, but I'll add that here when it is available.

I found this in the Indian Center News of March 1968.  A sign of our times.

RIP, Joe.

Joe and I connected after our military service.  Joe had a softball team and I started playing on his team.  I was looking for a job other than the one I had and Joe suggested the Postal Service.  He told me how to sign up and helped me navigate the process.  Joe was a Letter Carrier and knew what the other jobs were like.  Bottom line I retired after 37 years advancing to Manager Plant Maintenacne due to Joe advise and help.  I last saw him at 50th reunion; glad I got the chance to thank him for helping me find my career.  I am sure there will be baseball where you are now - Rest in peace my friend and Thank you!

I always liked Joe, and he always seemed to be on the winning side in football. He always would supprise me in how agile he was for his size. He would say stay behind me runt and you won't get hurt as he was twice my size. RIP Joe you will be missed.

I have known Joe since Elementary school. Joe was one of the kindness and thoughtful people I have known. Joe read my dad's obituary and came too the memorial. That was so thoughtful. It meant so much to my mom.  My mom and dad thought the world of Joe,. That was Joe.

We talked on the phone several times in recent years and planned on getting together.  It didn't happen and I feel regret for that. Joe was one in a million.  He will be missed.

Wow,I'm numb. Big Joe and I became good friends in high school and remained great friends well after school.Like Doug Peters mentioned Joe put together a softball team. I have So Many visions of Joe hitting the ball at Des Moines Field House. To this day I still tell folks that Joe hit the ball one time that I think is still flying! It was an absolute Bomb! Joe, I hope you Rest In Eternal Peace and comfort! We will ALL MISS YOU!!! P.S. Thank You Again for letting me sit next to you in Algebra and slipping me the answers!Your student.Brad

Joe was the guy that you would want to be there when you need a friend. In January of 71 Joe and I were playing pickup basketball at the Highline open gym night. I severely sprained my ankle and was ready to just go home and put ice on it, when Joe looked at it and said I really need to take you to the ER. Turned out that was a good idea.

In late 1970 we began to hangout, as we had both recently gotten home from the army and Vietnam. He was a great guy and we shared many laughs and good times. Rest in peace old friend.
