In Memory

Jim Hughes

Jim Hughes

We lost another dear friend the day before Thanksgiving, as Jim Hughes lost his decades-long battle with his heart on Wednesday. He was the long-time proprietor of Sal's Deli in Burien, and everybody knew him as the kindest and friendliest guy ever, with a generous and wry sense of humor.  The bestest tribute comes from lifelong friend Dave Poleski (Evergreen '66), which I am stealing from his Facebook page.

My Bestest Pal, J.C. Hughes. June 7, 1948 to November 21, 2018. We roomed together for four years post military and somehow you were able to put up with me. Thanks for that, J.C. And thanks too for the years and years of unrelenting friendship, your amazing and truly inimitable humor, the music (despite your tin ear), the meals, for bestowing upon me the honorific title of 'Auntie Dave' and for forgiving me when I smoked up all of your stash while you were in Europe.
And now, as you row your boat away from this familiar shore over to the next, taking this piece of my heart along with you, turn around one last time and look back upon all of those of us who loved you so, and know how unutterably much you will be missed.
Godspeed dear pal of mine, go toward the light. I'll see you when I get there.

I love you beyond measure.

Your Auntie Dave.

I only knew JC our senior year.  His jade pinkie ring caught my attention.  I thought he was the coolest guy ever.

I don't remember much about many of my classmates, Jim being one of them. However it doesn't mean I don't feel the loss. Rest in peace Jim.

What a shame that we have not only lost another classmate but that it was Jim Hughes. He was always seen around Highline and always so pleasant and cheerful, in fact it seems that everywhere you went, there he was!!

For years he was also a shirttail relative of mine, as my little sister was married to Jack, his younger brother, and also Cathy, who also just lost her husband Gary Low, of a heart attack on Friday while he was golfing, and it was just on November 21st, that she had lost her older brother Jim of heart failure. This is so sad to hear, especially for Cathy to have lost them both within a week of each other!!

I am so glad that I got to know Jim and shared classes with him at Highline!! He was a very unique guy!!

RIP Jim, and we will all miss you.

Farewell Jim. My oldest friend. Funny how we would introduce each other to new friends just like that. Outside of my own family you're the one I've known the longest. Thank you for the many laughs, the tears, the great memories, but especially for your unconditional friendship. You're a lovely man Jim, I will surely miss you. Kido

J.C Hughes and I were part of a circle of friends that wore desert boots,  smoked cigarettes played music, quoted Dylan, and waned philosophically. I can’t wear a pair of desert boots without thinking of that circle of friends. I will miss J.C Every once in a while. John Henry a.k.a. Jack McDonald
